The Muslim community all over the world celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri, or also known as Hari Raya Puasa, to conclude the Ramadan holy month of fasting.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is the festival of Eid al-Fitri, celebrating victory over the fleshly body after a month-long period of abstinence.
Hence “puasa,” which translates into “fasting”.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is regarded as a merry celebration as it marks a person’s triumph and success on discipline and self-resistance which symbolizes refinement and rebirth.
The words ‘Hari Raya’ mean ‘day of celebration.’
Hari Raya Puasa is often mistaken to be the Muslim New Year but it is not.
It marks the end of the month of Ramadan.
When the new moon is seen on the evening of the last day of Ramadan, the fasting period comes to an end.
Such sightings are made by religious officials at various hilltops throughout countries in the world.
When the crescent moon is seen, the day after that will mark the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
After fulfilling their one-month of fasting, the Muslims are joyful to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa.
On the morning of the festival, the Muslims wear their new clothes and go to the mosque to pray.
Typically, a new baju kurung’s (women’s traditional clothing) and baju melayu‘s (men’s traditional wear) are bought for this special occasion.
And the house is also given a thorough spring cleaning.
They offer their thanks to God and after that they would ask for forgiveness from their elders.
The little ones will be given ‘duit raya’ or gifts of money in small green packets.
The first three days of Hari Raya are typically reserved for spending time with family.
After that, many families hold open houses during the month inviting friends and neighbors to share conversation, laughter and a variety of traditional delicacies.
If you visit Muslims’ homes on Hari Raya Puasa you can expect to taste a wide variety of delicious spicy dishes.
In a country such as Malaysia or Indonesia where there is a large number of Muslims, Hari Raya preparations are visible from about one month before the festival.
You will see bazaars everywhere and at night these places are lit up with glittering lights.
Many Muslims go here to buy food to bring home to break fast with their loved ones.
Are you invited to an Open House?
Your host won’t mind if you come empty-handed. But if you’d like to bring a token of appreciation anyway, a thoughtful card will be sufficient.
And remember to wish your host and their family a “Selamat Hari Raya!”
If you’re eating meals with your hands, which is typical during these celebrations
Then remember to eat with your right hand.
Your left is usually associated with less polite, non-eating activities.
When you greet your host, it’s best to do so by meeting both of your hands with theirs, and then bringing one hand to your chest.
It’s also best to refrain from exchanging salam with the opposite gender, unless initiated by the other person.
Enjoy your Hari Raya! And blessings to all.
